This is the USS Defiant from deep space nine. I like this design as it is unlike other Starfleet ships and the Defiant class is primarily designed for combat. It was developed at the Utopia Planetia Shipyards in order to fight the Borg. Besides conventional weapons the ship has pulse phaser cannons and quantum torpedo’s. This kit is made by AMT/ERTL and was designed as a snapfix type kit. This and a few other inaccuracies make the weak points of this kit but overall it's a good base to work from. The thing that annoyed me the most about this kit though is the raised panel lines. So I set about rectifying this by scribing over the original lines. I checked out some reference sources and found for the most part the panel line were in the right places. I have never scribes panel lines before so I started on the bottom of the ship so that any large mistakes would be hidden once the model was displayed. I have found that little mistakes can be rectified easily and any larger ones can be filled with putty and re-scribed. I will also light this model with LED's and a few fibre optic strands. I have drawn some inspiration from an article in finescale modeler ( JAN 1999 issue ) by Marc King but I am using the great lighting kit from Don's Light and Magic. Due to the tedious task of re-scribing the raised panel lines this is definitely an on-off project but once the panel line are done then I will go full on to get this kit finished.
