  SFM:UK 2006 COMPETITION ENTRY - EMERGENCY SERVICES

  *MAJOR UPDATE*

Well, this particular project is changing direction.  Since the announcement of the SFM:UK competition 2006, I have been thinking of a suitable yet fun entry.  So I decided that I could kill two birds with one stone and get a long term project finished, even though not quite in the way the kit was intended.

My entry will combine the Starfury and another donor kit in the form of a 1/72 search and rescue sea king.  The mid section/cabin of the sea king will be grafted onto the back of the Starfury forming a rescue cell for the downed Starfury pilots and will include the rescue crew.

In order to make this a bit more fun I will then paint the converted models in the colours of the RAF search and rescue sea king and use the sea king decals.

First step though is to finish the panel scribing that I started (this will probably be the hardest part of the project).  Then the back end of the starfury's body will be carefully removed to allow a modified sea king fuselage will be grafted on.

This is the Revell/Monogram model kit of the Mk1 Starfury from Babylon 5.  so far I have constructed the two main halves of the model.  the engine/control panels have been left off at the moment.  I will be drilling out the gun barrels but not worrying about over accurizing them.

Here is the airfix sea king donor kit.

I have also removed the back panel from the Starfury to facilitate the attachment of the sea king  fuselage that will be cut to size.  The last picture is the Starfury on the workbench shortly after the back panel surgery.

I have made some progress over the past few weeks but it has been slow due to good reasons.  As part of my job in the RAF I'm to Basra, Iraq for 4 months so this project is going on hold and unfortunately my entry for the competition will not be ready.  But here are some pictures of the progress so far and how the build was shaping up.  At a minimum I was going to try and get the worst gaps filled and the model tidied up then primed and painted and then decaled before I went away.  I wanted to do some weathering but all this is going to have to wait.  I had also bonded the resin SFM:UK base to the wooden base but hadn't got round to drilling and bonding in the brass support tube.  I did get the brass support tube bonded into the Starfury body.  The brass support rod has been  subsituted in the pictures with some clear tubing just for effect.
